Classical Sociological Theories

Classical Sociological Theories is a course that introduces the topic of sociology by summarizing classical sociological theories, explaining what they are, who proposed them, and what their impacts are. It shows students why classical sociological theories are still critical in modern societies. The course introduces the theories of Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Alexis de Tocqueville, Max Weber, and other famous sociologists, providing an introduction to the topic. My biggest takeaway from the course is understanding why sociology is still relevant to my daily life. After introducing the theories of a sociologist, the course always explains the theories' relevance. This explanation constructed a frame for me that helps me view the world through a sociological lens. It demonstrates how concepts like social class, power, inequality, and bureaucracy are not abstract ideas but have tangible impacts on our experiences.
